September 2016 Meeting

The Elgin Piecemakers are a group of about 20 women who love to quilt!  We meet once a month in each other’s homes to get caught up with what everyone has been up to since the last time we met.  We share our stories and our quilts, and some snacks before the evening is over. After our very short business meeting, we get down to show and tell! It is always fun to see what has been making!

J is famous in our group for having the most UFO’s (Un-finished objects)!  She has been working hard to get some of them done over the summer.
014
As you can see from the colours and fabrics in this little quilt, it has been in the UFO pile for a long time!  It is now done!   Congrats, J!
022
Another J made this applique top to display in the winter at her house.  This J only works on one project at a time!
025
B did some cross stitching over the summer when it was too hot to be playing with fabric.
028
Like most quilt guilds, our group makes charity quilts.  Every month, we are given some colours or a theme and we each make a 12.5″ block for a comfort quilt for adult cancer patients at our local hospital.  Two members get together to put the blocks together and two other members with long arm quilting machines take turns quilting the quilts.  This top was made from our green and blue blocks.
029
Here are out green, brown and cream blocks, made into a top.  I love the green cornerstones.
030
The brown and turquoise blocks were set on point with a perfect batik background added.
034
P made this table runner over the summer.  It was part of our show and tell.  (I am just learning how to use WordPress and have not figured out how to move the pictures around yet…)
035
This gray and yellow quilt is all ready to deliver to the chemo unit at the hospital.  We have heard many times from the recipients and their families how much these quilts help people to cope during their cancer treatments.
036
Most years, we participate in a challenge project.  This year, these two ladies organized a pillow challenge.  Each bag contains a 10″ square of Canada fabric and a pillow form, as well as the instructions for the challenge.
037
We are to make a pillow using all of the fabric in the 10″ square and whatever other fabric we want to add with the theme of Canada’s 150th Birthday (July 1, 2017).  We will unveil our projects in the Spring when they will be judged by someone outside our group and we will pick a viewer’s choice.  These two ladies won last year and part of their prize was the opportunity to organize this year’s challenge. I can’t wait to see everyone’s pillows!
011
For September’s blocks, we each made a large wonky log cabin/courthouse steps block in blue, yellow, red and white.  You can see that we all raided our scrap bins for these blocks.  These blocks will be cut into quarters and re-assembled.  D tells us there should be enough here to make two quilts.
